OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSMAN AWARDED AN OVERALL PUBLIC SERVICE BEST PERFORMER IN THE 2018/2019 FINANCIAL YEAR

On 19 December, Office of the Ombudsman received two awards at the 2018/2019 Performance Contract Awards Ceremony by Office of the President and Cabinet for achieving good performance in the delivery of public services and attained first ranking as a Best Performer in the category of constitutional bodies.

The Office of the Ombudsman’s core function as derived from the Republic of Malawi Constitution Section 123 (1) is to, “investigate any and all cases where it is alleged that a person has suffered injustice and it does not appear that there is any remedy reasonably available by way of proceedings in a court or by way of appeal from a court or where there is no other practicable remedy,”

Over the reporting year, inoder to fulfill its core functions, the office has been engaging in a number of activities, which includes; conducting own and systemic investigations, increasing investigations of service related complaints, reaching out to far and forgotten through its Mobile Accountability Clinics and public rallies, raising level of civic engagement and improving relationships with relevant stakeholders both locally and internationally.

Over and above these activities, the office in collaboration with the Ministry of Health has been operationizing the Hospital Ombudsman platform in many health facilities across the country which has seen a lot of health service delivery complaints being raised and resolved by our Hospital Ombudsman. Realizing its capabilities, the office was also given further responsibility of championing institutionalization of ethics and integrity in public service by Office of the President and Cabinet. 

However, these achievements could not have been realized without staff commitment and stakeholders unwavering support.
